Most of the time, this inexplicability is usually as simple as “How can everyone drive so badly yet still have driver’s licenses?” Sometimes, however, these unexplained mysteries are both eerie and terrifying.

For example, a North Carolina driver went viral after claiming he encountered something “not human” while driving alone at night. Other drivers say they’ve encountered everything from UFOs to Bigfoot.

Now, a user on TikTok says they’ve recorded a “ghost car.” But what does that mean?

What Happened To This Car?

In a video with over 20 million views, TikTok users Elise and Daniel (@mapletonchapter) share what they say is their “encounter with a ghost car.”

The video shows dashcam footage of an intersection. One of the passengers, Elise, points out a vintage-looking car—but when both passengers try to get a better look at it, it disappears behind an Amazon truck.

After a few seconds, however, it seems that the car is not just behind the Amazon truck but gone entirely.

“Are we crazy?” Elise asks. “It’s gone!”

In the overlay text, the couple says that they looked down the street and did not see the car. They also claim that there was “no tire shadow, no place for it to have turned.”

Commenters Are Freaked Out

In the comments section, users speculated about how something like this could have happened. Many favored a supernatural explanation.

“It’s a glitch in reality. Somewhere in another dimension it’s still 1958 and that car just made a left turn,” said a user. “I wonder for a second did they loose track of time?”

“Portals exist and the ‘veil’ is no longer existent in 2026!” declared another.

“Not ghost car. Different dimension connected with ours for a moment and then corrected itself. You witnessed another dimension…. Nothing ghostly about it. Just intertwined dimensions. Lucky you got to witness this!” exclaimed a third.

Are There Other Examples Of ‘Ghost Cars’?

The internet is filled with stories of “ghost cars,” many of which include video.

In one case, a car in Singapore entered an intersection only to suddenly collide with another vehicle that seemingly came out of nowhere. A similar situation happened in Australia, where the sudden appearance of a previously unseen vehicle caused an accident.

In most of these cases, speculation about how exactly this could have occurred was rampant, with theories ranging from camera trickery to actual sorcery.

What Explains This?

Thankfully, you don’t need to alter your understanding of reality to know what happened here.

Upon closer examination of the video, it becomes clear that the car was not a “ghost,” nor did it vanish. Instead, this is simply an issue of perspective and timing.

A much more likely explanation is that the vintage car simply sped up and went behind the Amazon van. After a few seconds, it sped up even more. From the TikTokers’ perspective, this meant that their view of the car was always obstructed by the Amazon delivery van.

Perspective and timing tend to explain a lot of these “ghost car” videos. Looking carefully at each of these videos, one can see how a well-timed, well-placed vehicle could obscure another car and keep it from view. This does not mean something supernatural is afoot—it simply means that you’ve gotta keep your eyes and mind open when out on the road.
