Two guys from Denver just set a Guinness World Record for building the tallest waffle stack (seriously) and the Twitter thread chronicling their momentous achievement is one heck of a must-read.
Spencer McCullough, 23, and his friend Steve Garguilo, used more than 50 pounds of waffle batter and even followed a 40-page PDF that McCullough received from Guinness to ensure that what they made fit the record-keeper’s definition of what they believe constitutes a waffle.
Because creating the world’s tallest stack of waffles naturally qualifies as very important news, Denver Post reporter Elizabeth Hernandez was tasked with covering the event.
You know when you get a press release to cover a Guinness world record attempt for tallest stack of waffles & expect it to be some big commercial thing & then it's just a guy's house? This is SO MUCH BETTER. Follow along, #Denver! Things might get weird! pic.twitter.com/xcxqZCMJZM

Garguilo, who traveled to Denver from Texas for the occasion, responded to McCullough asking if he would join him in the record attempt with, “In the future, please phrase these requests as a sentence, ‘you are coming to Denver’ and not as questions. See you then.”
ACTUAL TEXTUAL EVIDENCE because I am nothing if not a serious journalist, thank you pic.twitter.com/7TBHeIrMQF

The rest of the day Hernandez painstakingly reported on the historical goings-on taking place in McCullough’s back yard.
Some highlights… (no, this is amazingly not ALL of the tweets she posted on the record waffle stacking event).
There is an official DENVER LAND SURVEYOR here because the dudes needed someone to take an official measurement. THIS IS A SERIOUS OPERATION, YOU GUYS. THERE IS A 3D MEASURING DEVICE IN THE BACKYARD.

The waffles get broiled after being made to make the perfect, hardened stacking brick. Just a bunch of friends coming together to make breakfast foods in the name of GREATNESS, what a time to be alive pic.twitter.com/pWXgFtbhpG

The record to beat, by the way, is a 51 centimeter stack. Everyone is extremely confident that this will be beat.

WAFFLE DRAMA!! "We're at max capacity for production. WE NEED A BIGGER OVEN." I would say I am stressed but the cool thing about covering something about waffles is that EVERYTHING IS FINE
— Elizabeth Hernandez (@ehernandez) May 26, 2018
This is not the official stack because they literally have to use a specially leveled table but THINGS. ARE. HAPPENING. Also! Pancakes are being made because YUM pic.twitter.com/vZQZQeVoSl

For your envisioning purposes, this is 23 y/o waffle wunderkind Spencer, and, yes, he has a ponytail and crocs. pic.twitter.com/TUPMYTKc2f

Someone just walked in to bring a big fan into the kitchen because it's approximately 800 degrees and they said "I AM A BIG FAN OF THIS PROJECT" sidenote: can I be best friends with everyone here, I am just wondering
— Elizabeth Hernandez (@ehernandez) May 26, 2018
I have been told to stress this is AN UNOFFICIAL COUNT, but we are about 20 centimeters away, guys!!! pic.twitter.com/BVIbimuRv2

Oh, the anticipation.
If you're interested in the #WaffleWorldRecord, follow @ehernandez. She's legit. @jaketapper follows her.

Paul Girgis from Chicago flew in to Denver to visit a friend & realized this was happening & knew Spencer from college. "I thought it was a joke, but I'm here, and there are land surveyors?"

— Elizabeth Hernandez (@ehernandez) May 26, 2018
They are still stacking with the added help of a Miller Chill light beer with lime umbrella pic.twitter.com/8YM5HxVRgz
— Elizabeth Hernandez (@ehernandez) May 26, 2018
Laplante who, as a reminder, knows NO ONE HERE AND JUST SHOWED UP TO CELEBRATE BREAKFAST FOODS, says "My heart has been racing since waffle one hit the table. I want that written on tombstone."
— Elizabeth Hernandez (@ehernandez) May 26, 2018
Alright, they have RUN OUT OF WAFFLES at 67 cm. This is the new record!! THEY STACKED UNTIL THEY COULD STACK NO MORE
