A California woman matched with a man on a dating app and realized they go to the same gym. They decided to meet up for the first time to get a workout in together before spending money on dinner. But is it a convenient way to knock out a first date and a workout or just plain weird? Women shared split opinions on the unconventional date location.
In a video with around 2,000 views, TikToker Hayley Serna (@hayley_serna) sits in her car in workout clothes on her way to the gym date.
“I have a gym date right now. How do we feel about that?” she asks.
Serna shares mixed opinions, explaining that she likes the convenience of being able to get her workout in even if the date doesn’t go well. And she says the gym has sparked romance for her before.
“I’ve met three of my ex-boyfriends, one of them being my ex-husband, at the gym,” she explains. “I think it’s just because you’re there almost every single day, usually at the same time.”
She says that she recently went on a few conventional dinner dates, which “were such a waste of time.” So, she decided to give another gym date a try.
Serna notes that she hopes the gym date will lead to a fancier date if the first meeting goes well.
“I’m going to be at the gym anyways, so he’s not wasting my time. Because even if I don’t like him, I’m still getting my workout in,” she says.
What Do Women Really Think Of Gym Dates?
While Serna doesn’t mind meeting up at the gym for the first time, other women have vastly different opinions. On the r/NoStupidQuestions subreddit, one man asked for their opinions before asking a woman to work out and get smoothies as their first date.
“I wouldn’t consider this a date but just hanging out. but its nice is someone just wants an extra reason to hangout,” one suggested.
“I’m kinda split. Like… on one hand, it’s cute if we’re both into fitness. You get to bond over sweat, hype each other up, maybe laugh through the pain of leg day together,” another wrote. “That can be fun, right? But if it’s a first date? Ehhh, I dunno.”
However, others are completely against it.
“Nope. I’m a fitness instructor and workout every day. I enjoy it. It’s not an activity to do on a first date. Kind of like the movies. I love going to the movies but it’s not a great first date,” she told the poster.
A second remarked, “Absolutely f— not lmao like what even is that?? Find someone at the gym if that’s what you’re wanting but like obviously red flags if you can’t find someone at the gym you go to and you need to like negotiate a shared experience that you don’t have to pay for.”
How Did Her Gym Date Go?
While Serna was initially optimistic, the gym date unfortunately didn’t work out as planned.
“He never showed up,” she exclaims in a follow-up video. “He flaked on me and kept giving me the runaround like, ‘Oh, I’m doing laundry. I’m doing dishes.'”
She remarks that the man wouldn’t even have to buy anything in order to come on the date, leaving her “flabbergasted.”
“It was free. It was a free date,” she says. “This is why it was good to have a first meet up at the gym because guess what? I didn’t waste my time.”
Serna shares an optimistic take after being stood up, saying she plans to head home and do self-care instead of wasting time worrying about the date.
“Just continue to put myself first,” she says. “Oh well.”
