Hilton Head Island is one of those regions where sharks and alligators come in close contact with regularity yet it never ceases to amaze us.
There are multiple rivers in the low country region that dump freshwater into the Atlantic Ocean, creating brackish water conditions throughout area. On top of that, it is a vibrant fishery which brings in an abundance of sharks. I took one of the best shark fishing charters of my life in Hilton Head where it was ‘catching’ not ‘fishing’ because the action never stopped.
Sharks And Alligators Converge At Skull Creek In Hilton Head
It has been a handful of years since I’ve been to the Skull Creek Boathouse in Hilton Head. Typically, when we visit that are we stay across the bridge over in Palmetto Bluff but will try and come into HH for a meal at Skull Creek.
Never in my visits there have I seen anything like this… This video on TikTok has picked up 2.3 million views in two days. It was posted by user Gina Athans with the caption “can’t believe I saw this in Hilton Head island.”
There are multiple large lemon sharks swimming between the dog and then she zooms in on a big alligator. All within feet of where they are standing and a stone’s throw from the Skull Creek oyster bar.
@ginaroseathans Can’t believe we saw this in #HiltonHeadIsland #SkullCreekDockside this week! #lemonsharks #alligators
The European Mind simply cannot comprehend that. Nor can Americans on the West Coast. Someone is a slight misstep away from falling into the water and being surrounded by an untold number of huge sharks and alligators.
Be safe out there!
Funnily enough, the top comment on TikTok suggests that falling into the water is one everyone’s mind.
User @keri wrote “I just know my body would absolutely YEEETT itself into that water against my will.” Suggesting they are unable to trust their “own body or brain.”
Another person, u/Victoria, said “y’all putting too much trust in that wooden railing!!!” which seems like a fair assessment of the situation.
For anyone thinking that alligator was a little guppy, it was not. It is easy to mistake their size when all you can see is the head.
But a follow-up video sheds some light on the size of this alligator. It was a biggun!

If you are ever in the Hilton Head area, make sure to catch a meal at Skull Creek. Just be sure to get there early because the wait list gets enormous.
