The original Fast and the Furious debuted in 2001 and the plot revolved around a group of street racers with suped-up Honda Civics who also enjoyed performing heists of tractor trailers full of the latest state-of-the-art consumer electronics such as camcorders and VHS players. Fast forward to 2019 and there have been eight movies in the Fast and Furious franchise and there is now a spin-off that stars Idris Elba as a genetically-engineered bulletproof, supervillain. Boy, how things have changed.

The first trailer for Hobbs & Shaw looks ridiculously action-packed. The trailer has John Wick-esque beautifully choreographed gunfights on the sides of skyscrapers, which is no surprise since the director is David Leitch, who was at the helm for John Wick, Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2.

Gone are the days of the F&F movies featuring a 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse with a nitrous boost, the new Hobbs & Shaw features vehicles such as a four-axle armored truck and a McLaren 720S.

In Hobbs & Shaw, the bad guy is international terrorist Brixton, a genetically-modified superhuman or as he calls himself a “human evolutionary change.” Brixton is so powerful that it will take two good guys to stop him. Dwayne Johnson stars as Luke Hobbs and he is teamed up with his British anti-hero counterpart Deckard Shaw played by Jason Statham in a kind of buddy-cop vibe.

Here is the official synopsis from Universal Pictures:

Ever since hulking lawman Hobbs (Johnson), a loyal agent of America’s Diplomatic Security Service, and lawless outcast Shaw (Statham), a former British military elite operative, first faced off in 2015’s Furious 7, the duo have swapped smack talk and body blows as they’ve tried to take each other down.

But when cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist Brixton (Idris Elba) gains control of an insidious bio-threat that could alter humanity forever – and bests a brilliant and fearless rogue MI6 agent (The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby), who just happens to be Shaw’s sister – these two sworn enemies will have to partner up to bring down the only guy who might be badder than themselves.

Hobbs & Shaw blasts open a new door in the Fast universe as it hurtles action across the globe, from Los Angeles to London and from the toxic wasteland of Chernobyl to the lush beauty of Samoa.

Will the dynamic duo be able to take down what is essentially a villain version of Captain America? Will the next Fast and Furious movie have superheroes (Maybe The Rock as a rock-like superhero like The Thing from Fantastic Four) or does this point to an obvious direction where the Fast & Furious movies will soon be set in space? We’ll have to wait to find out. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw smashes into theaters on August 2nd.
