Known for how frequently he interacts with fans on social media, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn hopped on Twitter over the weekend to answer some questions from fans. And one question and answer, particularly, has caught the eye of Marvel Cinematic Universe lovers.

Replying to a tweet with a simple, “Yes, that’s exactly what it means,” Gunn confirmed that Groot’s final line in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3., which is “I love you guys,” is able to be heard by audience’s because they finally understand his language.

So, basically, while we’ve been hearing Groot say “I am Groot” all this time, his final line in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the first time that audiences actually understand him. Groot’s language, and the way he talks, remains the same as it’s always been — it’s us, the audience, that’s just hearing it differently now.

This understanding of Groot’s language is teased earlier in the film when the new Gamora doubts the Guardians’ ability to actually understand what Groot is saying when he says “I am Groot.”

In addition to the Vin Diesel-voiced Groot, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Karen Gillan as Neubla, Will Poulter as Adam Warlock, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Chukwudi Iwuji as the High Evolutionary, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Maria Bakalova as the voice of Cosmo the Space Dog, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, and more.

The film — the second MCU movie of the year following Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and preceding The Marvels — is now playing in theaters across the United States. Make sure to check out our full review of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 here.
