A teacher stopped by Jersey Mike’s to pick up a sandwich for lunch. Then some innocent small talk turned awkward when the worker asked her a personal question.
In a video with over 57,000 views, TikToker Mary Walker (@mary.lizzzzz) holds up the brown paper bag with her sub inside.
“When I was checking out. [The worker] was like, ‘How are you?'” she says. “I was like, ‘I’m tired.'”
Then she thought she heard the cashier ask, “What do you do?”
“What do I do? I’m a teacher,” Walker says she replied.
The Jersey Mike’s worker repeated the question until Walker realized what she was really asking.
“She’s like, ‘No, when are you due?’ and pointed to my stomach,” she recounts. “B—-, I ain’t pregnant!”
The caption reads, “It’s 2026. Why are grown women still asking other grown women this question lol can we just have a little bit of a tummy? Dang. lol.”
Is It Rude To Ask Someone When They’re Due?
Asking a woman when she’s due might seem like an innocent question if you think she’s pregnant. However, the off-chance that she’s not expecting makes the question insulting and hurtful.
Some women have conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), which can cause weight gain in the midsection without a pregnancy, according to Cleveland Clinic. Some women with PCOS struggle with infertility, which can make a question about a due date even more painful. Walker shares her experience with PCOS on her page.
It’s best to hold off on questions about someone’s pregnancy until they bring it up to you to avoid a similarly awkward interaction.
Other Women Share How They Would Respond
In the comments of the viral video, other women shared their savage responses for the same inappropriate question.
“Some lady did this to my mom and it was during a funeral. She even went so far as to touch her stomach. My mom was like yeah thanks we’re adopting her from China,” one shared. “I’ve never seen that lady again in my whole entire life!”
Another joked, “Lmaooooo me, very pregnant, responding ‘what do you mean’ when someone asked me.”
Others said they were too flabbergasted to come up with a clever clap back in the moment.
“This happened to me and it was so painfully embarrassing for both of us,” one commenter said.
“I had a lady literally come up and rub my belly all excited like ‘congratulations!’… I was not pregnant,” a second wrote.
“A lady at the candy store was like you must be tired of walking since you’re pregnant I was like wtfffff I played along and walked out with no candy,” a third viewer shared.
