Kate Winslet gave her Ammonite co-star Saoirse Ronan a sex scene, with her, for Ronan’s 26th birthday. Totally normal Hollywood birthday stuff.
Winslet, 45, wanted to make sure the Golden Globe Award-winning Ronan had a birthday to remember, and so since the two of them were in the middle of filming, Kate used her pull to get the shoot for the sex scene rescheduled for Saoirse’s birthday.
“I just wanted her to have, frankly, a great memory in her film life, regardless of how the scene played out or the movie turned out,” Winselt told Entertainment Weekly.

“I knew that it would be [great] just because of the experience that we would share together. I knew that it would be very equal.”
Winslet and Ronan choreographed the scene themselves with no rehearsals or anything blocked beforehand. Only female crew members were allowed in the room for filming. “We had a female boom operator who was actually six months pregnant,” she notes. “So, we were all quite focused on making sure that she had enough space because the room was quite small.” There was dim lighting and handheld cameras. “I just could feel that Saoirse and I had the same ideas in terms of what we wanted to express in the scene,” she says, “the emotional underpinning of the scene, the connection between these two women — which is, of course, more important than anything in any love scene. We were on the same page in terms of that.”
Ammonite is set in 1840s England where acclaimed but overlooked fossil hunter Mary Anning (played by Winslet) and a young woman sent to convalesce by the sea develop an intense relationship, altering both of their lives forever.
Probably won’t be seeing that.
Also, I just realized while looking at Kate Winslet’s film credits, that I have only seen her in one movie, Divergent, since she appeared in Titanic 23 years ago. How is that even possible?
