When Chloe Zhao cleaned up at the Academy Awards over the weekend by taking home the prize for Best Director and Best Picture, there was a part of me that desperately hoped Marvel Studios had the trailer for her upcoming MCU film Eternals ready to unleash. After all, the ceremony was broadcast on ABC, and Disney owns both ABC and Marvel, so what better time to drop the trailer for their new film from the recently-crowned Academy Award winner?

Alas, while no Eternals trailer was unveiled, the hype train has left the station all the same, as Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently gave an interview with Variety where he made it sound as though the 7,000-year spanning epic is about to become one of the best MCU films of all-time.
Zhao — a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the comics from which it originates — approached the company herself. She was originally considered for “Black Widow,” according to Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, but took herself off the list.
Eventually, Zhao and Marvel executive Nate Moore began working together on an “Eternals” pitch, which Feige calls “spectacular.” It was, he says, “a very bold and very ambitious, sprawling 7,000-year story of humanity and our place in the cosmos.” [via Variety]
Let me tell you something: I’m an absolute sucker for movies that blend sci-fi with grandiose emotion (like, I think Cloud Atlas is pretty sweet), so everything Feige is saying here is right up my alley. Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Infinity War are my two favorite MCU films of all time and I’m fully expecting Eternals to enter that conversation once it’s released later this year. This also isn’t the first time that the always-calculated Feige has heaped praise on Eternals, as he previously categorized Zhao’s pitch for the film as the “best” he’s ever heard. There have even been reports that Marvel Studios is “almost in disbelief” over the film’s quality.

Here’s the official synopsis for Eternals, via Marvel Studios:
“Marvel Studios’ Eternals features an exciting new team of Superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ancient aliens who have been living on Earth in secret for thousands of years. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, an unexpected tragedy forces them out of the shadows to reunite against mankind’s most ancient enemy, The Deviants.”
At this time, Eternals — which stars Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Kit Harington, Gemma Chan, and more — is currently scheduled to hit theaters on Friday, November 5. Eternals is just one of many Marvel Cinematic Universe films due out in 2021, as Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Spider-Man: No Way Home are also set to be released this year.
