20th Century Studios has released the official trailer to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the sequel to 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes.

The film picks up ears after the events of War for the Planet of the Apes — which was directed by The Batman filmmaker Matt Reeves — and sees ape-kind as the dominant species on Earth.

Here is the official synopsis for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, via 20th Century Studios:

Director Wes Ball breathes new life into the global, epic, franchise set several generations in the future following Caesar’s reign, in which apes are the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows.

As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.

Prior to making this new Planet of the Apes movie, director Wes Ball, 43 years old, was previously known for his work on the Maze Runner trilogy of films.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes stars Owen Teague in the lead role alongside Freya Allan, Peter Macon, Eka Darville, Kevin Durand, and more, and will be hitting movie theaters in the United States on Friday, May 24, 2024.

This iteration of the Planet of the Apes franchise was first launched back in 2011 with the release of Rise of the Planet of the Apes in 2011.

The series would then achieve a new level of both commercial success and critical reception once Matt Reeves took over the franchise for 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes.
