It’s Official: The Best ‘Star Wars’ Video Game Of All-Time Is Being Remade

BioWare/LucasArts

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe we beginning to grow into the behemoth we know and love today, I used to joke that they should wake me up when they make a video game. Sure, movies about these characters are a thrill, but actually getting to play as them is another thing entirely (a massive video game nerd sentiment, I know, but I’m one of those people who think the Batman: Arkham series is one of the best Batman stories I’ve ever consumed). It obviously ain’t easy, either, as the Avengers game that did finally release last year was an absolute disaster.

To be fair to Marvel, they aren’t the only franchise I feel that way about, as I’ve been waiting for a Star Wars game that allows me to traverse the galaxy as my own Jedi for what feels like my entire life. Yes, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was a step in the right direction, but it wasn’t open-world and it still followed a linear story.

That game that I’ve been searching for, Knights of the Old Republic, used to exist back in the Xbox/PlayStation 2 era, as the original game was released back in 2003, close to 20 years ago. And according to recent reports, it’s officially on the verge of making a comeback, as Aspyr Media is working on a remake of the beloved Star Wars RPG.

The unannounced Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake will be developed by renowned port studio Aspyr. Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier revealed the detail while a guest on the MinnMax podcast. It follows earlier whispers of a KOTOR remake which have swirled for some time, and which also suggested the project wasn’t being handled internally by EA or original studio BioWare.

Eurogamer has separately heard of Aspyr’s involvement, and that while the developer is known for often releasing straight ports, work is currently underway to make the project more of a remake instead. [via Eurogamer]

Given how early in development the game seems to be, there’s no release date attached to the project at this time. With the next Star Wars film set to be released towards the end of 2023, perhaps that’s when we can expect the next video game in the franchise, too.
