Earlier this year, it was reported that Quentin Tarantino’s final movie would be titled The Movie Critic and that it would begin filming in the fall.

Given the months-long actors’ strike, however, production has been delayed and it is unclear when it will begin.

In the months since it was announced, there have been various rumors and reports of who might star in the film, such as Paul Walter Hauser (IMDb currently lists him as the star) and Tarantino regulars such as Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta, and the legendary Kurt Russell, who has appeared in two of QT’s films: Deathproof and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Speaking to BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast about his new AppleTV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, however, Russell not only denied having a role in the film but didn’t even seem to be aware of its existence.

“Kurt, when do you start filming The Movie Critic?” I asked.

“I don’t know what that is. Is that a title? I’m serious, I don’t know what that is,” Russell replied.

“I’ve heard that you’re in Tarantino’s next film,” I said.

“No, I haven’t talked to him. I just hope he’s healthy. Last time I was talking to him, he was in Tel Aviv, so things are pretty rough there. Don’t know. I have no idea. He’ll either call or he won’t,” Russell stated.

According to Tarantino, The Movie Critic is set in 1977 California “and is based on a guy who really lived, but was never really famous, and he used to write movie reviews for a porno rag.”

“He wrote about mainstream movies and he was the second-string critic. I think he was a very good critic. He was as cynical as hell. His reviews were a cross between early Howard Stern and what Travis Bickle might be if he were a film critic,” Tarantino said earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival.

Russell’s current project, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, is currently in the midst of its first season on AppleTV+.
