To celebrate the wrap of production on the film, Joker: Folie à Deux director Todd Phillips shared new official photos of both Joaquin Phoenix’s instantly-iconic Joker and Lady Gaga’s brand new Harley Quinn.

The photo of Gaga, in particular, has been going viral online given that it’s the first look that fans have gotten at the Grammy and Oscar winner as Harley Quinn, the famed paramour of Gotham’s Clown Prince of Crime.

While the official synopsis for the Joker sequel has yet to be revealed, it’s been confirmed that the film will be a musical, which is obvious given Gaga’s casting.

Released in 2019, Joker went on to become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time as it earned $1.074 billion at the global box office. The film was also a critical success, as it racked up 11 Academy Award nominations and ultimately took home wins for Best Original Score and Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix.

Alongside Phoenix and Gaga, the highly-anticipated sequel will also feature Zazie Beetz (reprising her role from the first film), Academy Award nominee Brendan Gleeson, Academy Award nominee Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey.

Joker: Folie à Deux will hit theaters in the United States on Wednesday, October 4, which is exactly five years after the original was released.

In addition to Joker: Folie à Deux, Joaquin Phoenix will also be starring in Beau Is Afraid from director Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar), which hits theaters on April 21, and as Napoleon Bonaparte in an AppleTV+ biopic helmed by filmmaking icon Ridley Scott, who helped Phoenix achieve stardom 20-plus years ago by casting him as the villainous Commodus in the Best Picture-winning Gladiator.
