A man decided to save a bass fish that appeared to be stuck inside a small pool of water. Here's what he said and how his audience reacted.
When a person goes fishing, they usually take photos or bring home a number of prizes. But one man ended up having a different experience entirely.
A content creator who goes by Achilles (@achilles.adventures) posted a video that received more than 305,000 views. In it, he says that he found a bass that wanted to move from one pond to another. The fish, he says, was cut off from a larger pool, giving it no way to escape. Achilles made the decision to move the fish to the larger body of water.
‘I’m Gonna See If I Can Somehow Get Him Out’
In the video, Achilles films a large bass aimlessly swimming in a small pond.
“ I’m just out here fishing, and this bass is in here, so I’m gonna see if I can somehow get him out,” he says.
Achilles had a method to get the fish. He put his hand in the water as bait and waited.
After some near-bites, the fish eventually latches onto him. He pulls the squirming bass out of the water and walks over to a larger pool. The content creator drops the fish in, and it immediately swims out of sight.
Kind Act Gets Praise
In the comment section, viewers said that Achilles didn’t have to go out of his way to be kind. For that reason, they said that his act was notable.
“This is so human and so touching. Thanks for being a steward of the land,” a viewer said.
Another commenter added, “Feel like he knew his only way out was to trust you.”
What Would Have Happened To The Fish?
While most viewers were focused on Achilles’ bass save, a few commenters discussed the small body of water the fish ended up in.
Within hours, a body of water can grow, shrink, or redistribute, opening up or closing pathways that fish normally traverse. In some circumstances, this can actually foster new populations of fish in areas where they previously did not dwell. Outside of birds occasionally traveling with fish eggs attached to their wings, it’s one of a few natural ways for a new fish population to enter a new body of water.
MidWest Ponds explains the phenomenon, saying, “During heavy rain or snowmelt, rivers and streams can overflow and temporarily connect to nearby ponds. This allows fish to swim into new habitats through natural flood routes, especially in flat, low-lying areas.”
But the body of water this particular fish ended up in appeared to be too small. According to some viewers, the water may have also been stagnant.
“[He] probably knew he was gonna die,” a viewer said.
Another commenter said, “Even if that was the bed, it was inaccessible, and it would have starved. Heck, given a few weeks without rain, it would have evaporated and cooked em. Good on ya, brother.”
Commenters concluded that the fish would have met a tragic fate if Achilles didn’t intervene. So they were grateful to the fisherman for doing one small thing to help a restless freshwater dweller.
