After having a meeting with the Pope, legendary director Martin Scorsese has confirmed that he is developing a movie about Jesus Christ.
According to reports, after debuting his latest film Killers of the Flower Moon at the Cannes Film Festival in France, Scorsese then flew over to the Vatican for a private meeting with the Pope.
Following the meeting, Scorsese announced that he would be making a movie about the life of Jesus Christ.
“I have responded to the Pope’s appeal to artists in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus. And I’m about to start making it,” Scorsese during a conference at the Vatican.
At this time, it’s unclear what form Scorsese’s film will take, especially since he already made The Last Temptation of Christ back in 1988.
Speaking to Commonwealth Magazine back in 2017 about the release of his film Silence, another of his religious dramas, Scorsese said that he once considered making a movie about Christ set in contemporary New York City.
“My original idea was in the early ’60s… I had a dream that I could maybe make a film someday [about Jesus],” Scorsese said.
“And immediately I thought of making a film of the Gospel, but set on the Lower East Side, in the tenements, in modern dress. And the crucifixion would be on the West Side docks, and in black-and-white. And then I saw Pasolini’s Gospel, and I said, ‘No, there’s no way for me to do it.'”
Given that Scorsese has already made three Christianity-focused projects — The Last Temptation of Christ, Kundun, and Silence — movie fans were quite confused about the news that he’s making another Jesus movie.
If you want to be real about it, this is maybe the 20th Jesus movie he’s made https://t.co/nKg3wk6Uap

Why not just say “Scorsese to make film”? Like 80% of his movies are about Jesus being disappointed in the main character. https://t.co/F4f04a0Jm0 pic.twitter.com/dm0hS4sqTv

There was also one particular joke making the rounds: that the movie should be called “Godfellas”, which, of course, is an homage to his 1990 masterpiece Goodfellas.

Are there any sports books out there willing to take bets on who plays The Big J in Marty’s Jesus movie? Because I’d like to place a wager on Adam Driver.
