If there was one director who could convince Daniel Day-Lewis to come out of retirement, it’s Martin Scorsese.

And according to the legendary 81-year-old filmmaker, he may be able to do just that.

While giving an acceptance speech at the National Board of Review awards in New York City on Thursday night, Scorsese — whose next film is an 80-minute movie about Jesus — said that there’s “maybe time” for him and DDL to make another movie together.

“We did 2 films together and it’s one of the greatest experiences of my life… maybe there’s time for one more,” Scorsese said while accepting the award for Best Director at the National Board of Review awards.

The two films that Day-Lewis and Scorsese made together are 1993’s The Age of Innocence and 2002’s Gangs of New York.

Day-Lewis, of course, has been retired since 2017, having last starred in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread. Prior to that, his most recent film appearance was in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln in 2012.

Getting Day-Lewis to make another film would certainly be something that would be celebrated by movie fans as the 66-year-old Englishman retired before his 60th birthday. For comparison, Tom Cruise is 61-years-old.

Day-Lewis is widely considered to be one of the best actors of all time, certainly of Hollywood’s modern era. He has been nominated for Best Actor at the Academy Award six times and has won three times for his performances in My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood, and Lincoln.

In addition to his movie about Jesus, reports have indicated that Scorsese is also developing an adaptation of David Grann’s novel The Wager. Grann also wrote the source material for Scorsese’s latest film Killers of the Flower Moon, which is expected to be nominated for Best Picture and this year’s Academy Awards, which will be held in March.
