Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have famously been friends for decades. Now one of them believes they may legitimately be brothers.
While the story of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson’s potential brotherly bond is well told at this point, the short version of the story is this: McConaughey’s mother once implied that she *knew* (cheeky emphasis on the “knew”) Harrelson’s father.

Matthew McConaughey isn’t interested in getting a DNA test to find out if Woody Harrelson’s actually his brother
In a recent interview, McConaughey denied the long-running rumor that he and Harrelson are half-siblings, while acknowledging that Harrelson “believes wholeheartedly” in the idea.
McConaughey has refused to take a DNA test with Harrelson to settle the rumor, which some have interpreted as evidence he subconsciously suspects it might be true.

Woody’s father, Charles Harrelson, was a convicted contract killer who assassinated federal judge John H. Wood Jr. in 1979 — the first federal judge killed in the 20th century in the line of duty. Charles disappeared from the family’s Houston home in 1968, and Woody didn’t reconnect with him until his arrest made national news in 1981.
Harrelson has said he’s convinced the two are brothers and remains open to taking a DNA test. McConaughey has held off, citing the emotional weight of potentially redefining his father’s identity after more than 50 years of believing otherwise.
I read McConaughey’s book Greenlights a few years back, and the tales are so tall, so Big Fish-esque, that what first came to mind when I closed the book was, “If these stories are true, this guy’s basically a real-life Huck Finn.”
But that’s the thing with McConaughey: not only are the stories so far-fetched, but his personality is so performative that it can be hard to separate fact from fiction. Bob Dylan infamously did something similar as he’d often fabcriate the details of his past as he’d go along.
The two are promoting their new Apple TV+ comedy series Brothers, premiering September 23, in which fictionalized versions of themselves move in together at McConaughey’s Texas ranch and stumble onto a family secret suggesting the two might actually be related.
Brothers premieres with two episodes on Apple TV+ on September 23, with the remaining six airing weekly through November 4.
