Before Zack Snyder made Man of Steel, director Matthew Vaughn pitched the studio on a Superman film, which, obviously, never got made, with Vaughn instead directing films such as Kingsman and X-Men: First Class.

Still, even though he didn’t get the Superman job over a decade ago, the 52-year-old filmmaker remains a massive fan of the character and the universe, leading BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast to ask whether he’d have any interest in directing the upcoming adaptation of Superman: Woman of Tomorrow over at Warner Bros. and DC Studios.

“It’s funny you say that,” Vaughn said when we asked about potentially directing Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, additionally noting our surprise that he hasn’t been asked about it yet given that he’s a self-proclaimed “Superman nut.”

“I’m a huge fan of Milly Alcock. Huge fan. Met with her for this other project we’re working on — she turned me down, which was sad. She’s a fabulous actress. Then again, I do find it very weird that they haven’t got a director. That surprised me, because you shouldn’t cast a movie the director should be casting the movie. I don’t understand who cast it if there isn’t a director.”

When we pressed Vaughn on further elaborating on whether he would have interest in the project, we asked whether he was pleading the fifth, to which he said:

“No [I’m not pleading the fifth]. I was asked about doing The Flash way back, but I said I’d only do it if I could recast — if I’m directing my own superhero film, I want my own, new superhero. But, Milly Alcock, I probably would have put forward for it if I was directing… so I haven’t considered it. Never say never. I’m a big fan of James Gunn and Peter Safran, so yeah, I would consider it.”

Vaughn’s new movie Argylle, which hits theaters on Friday, February 2, stars Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, John Cena, and Samuel L. Jackson. Check out the official trailer below.
