Virtually every time Meghan Markle pops up in the news days these, the story seems to negatively affect her reputation. This latest instance sees the Duchess of Sussex on the receiving end of backlash for a PR stunt gone wrong.
In a video posted to her Instagram account, Meghan Markle detailed meeting a teenage girl who just lost her home in Altadena who had lost her homes in the wildfires.
Markle explains that the 15-year-old’s mother told her that her daughter immediately looked for the t-shirt she got from a recent Billie Eilish concert upon returning to the ruins of their burned down home.
Markle then used her wealth of connections — one of which was Maroon 5’s Adam Levineto — to get a message to Eilish, who responded by sending Markle a bunch of merch, including some signed gear.
All told, in a vaccum, great stuff from the parties involved. Except that’s not the way it’s landing, as Markle is now being accused of name-dropping, clout-chasing, and perhaps even lying.
I don’t think this is going to land how #MeghanMarkle wants it to. She didn’t know how to replace a Billie Eilish concert t shirt? Um..Amazon? Obviously she wanted to name drop & humble brag, and she couldn’t just DO this, she had to announce how altruistic, connected, and nice… pic.twitter.com/m8NRgrnycE

One account even accused Markle of fabricating the situation, claiming that residents were allowed to return to the area she was describing at the time of her visit.
She’s lying! And here’s the dupers delight to show it!
Residents weren’t allowed at that time, so she created this fictional account of seeing someone go through the rubble.
She’s a fraud! #MeghanMarkleExposed #MeghanMarkleIsANarcissist pic.twitter.com/OfMORdTqdI

Markle has also turned off comments on the original Instagram post, perhaps suggesting she’s aware of the way the video has landed. Markle’s upcoming Netflix series With Love, Meghan, which was delayed from January to March due to the Los Angeles fires, is likely to produce nearly infinite more moments for her skeptics and haters to latch onto.
