After years of speculation regarding a third National Treasure movie, Disney has finally taken a legitimate step toward making it a reality.

In the new Disney+ spin-off series, National Treasure: Edge of History, Justin Bartha’s character Riley Poole — who starred alongside Nic Cage’s Benjamin Gates in the first two National Treasure films — made a cameo appearance to tease a potential third film.

The tease makes a mention of Page 47 of the Book of Secrets, which was teased towards the end of National Treasure: Book of Secrets, which was released 15 years ago.

When Jess says that Riley is retired from treasure-seeking, he replies, “Not retired. Ben and I have been working on this super important thing for the last three, four, 15 years.”

Riley adds, “Let’s just say, there’s 47 reasons to be interested.” That number should immediately raise brows for anyone who’s been following the National Treasure films.

At the very end of National Treasure: Book of Secrets, the president, played by Bruce Greenwood, allowed Cage’s Ben to take a look at this particular page (Page 47). Audiences didn’t get to see what was on it, but they heard Ben say, “It’s life-altering, sir.” [via Entertainment Weekly]

If there was ever a time for Disney to pull the trigger on completing the National Treasure trilogy, it’s certainly right now, as the 58-year-old Oscar-winning Cage is currently in the midst of a career renaissance thanks to performances in Pig and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and upcoming roles in films such as Universal’s Renfield and A24’s Dream Scenario.

The first four episodes of National Treasure: Edge of History — which stars Lisette Oliviera and Catherine Zeta-Jones with Justin Bartha and Harvey Keitel reprising their roles from the films — are now streaming on Disney+. The season finale of the ten-episode-long first season will hit the streamer on February 8.
