New York Woman Warns Against Piece Of Cake Moving Company, Says They Expect $1,000 Tip: ‘They Quoted Me $1,800 To Move A Couch’

As far as moving companies in New York City go, Piece of Cake is notorious for negative reviews and poor customer feedback on online platforms such as Reddit and TikTok.

The company has 4-star-plus scores on Yelp, Trustpilot, and Google Reviews, including an almost perfect 5 on some platforms. Elsewhere on the internet, however, customers tell a very different story.

People have accused the company of rude movers demanding large tips, damaged furniture, and generally stressful moving experiences—so much so that one woman on TikTok has made it her mission to, as she puts it, “Deinfluence you from using Piece of Cake Moving.”

In a recent video with over 459,300 views, TikTok creator @type_bay films one of the company’s recognizable hot pink moving trucks as workers unload items from the back.

“That’ll be a $1,000 tip via Zelle or we keep your wardrobe and break your TV,” she wrote in the video’s text overlay.

It doesn’t appear that she used the company’s services as shown in the video. It’s likely she came across a pink truck and shared an example of what she thinks it’s capable of.

‘Worst Movers’

The comments were filled with people claiming they had similarly unpleasant experiences with Piece of Cake.

“Lol they threatened me when I gave them a 20% cash tip at the end of a move and tried to convince me I was supposed to give them 20% each,” they wrote. “Aka a 100% tip. worst movers in the world,”

Another alleged that items went missing during their move.

“They stole an entire box of Waterford place settings from me in 2020. my 12 piece set went down to 7 and I’ve never been able to replace it bc it’s discontinued. I think I got $60 in compensation for like over $1k of stolen items,” they wrote.

One viewer said a mover even followed up after receiving a tip.

“Literally after I tipped them the guy texts me and says ‘are you going to send more,’” they wrote.

Others complained about the movers’ behavior toward people who weren’t even customers.

“They’re also super rude to neighbors,” one person wrote. They described workers allegedly trying to hold an entire elevator bank during a move and yelling when she tried to use one themselves.

“While they were screaming at me with lots of expletives, I calmly asked them if they thought I would ever be intimidated by a man and waved as the elevator doors closed lol,” they wrote.

Have Other Customers Complained Of Similar Tactics?

Reviewers online say the same happened to them, though maybe not for the same amounts of money Bayley suggests.

In a March 2024 Better Business Bureau review, one customer said the lead mover complained that she had too much stuff before telling her he could handle it, “but I better give them 20% of tip.” She calculated that to be about $400.

The customer also alleged that the crew left some belongings behind and placed boxes in the wrong areas.

A similar accusation appeared in a May 2023 r/AskNYC thread. One commenter said his girlfriend hired Piece of Cake. When he arrived, a mover was allegedly trying to convince her to leave a 50% tip for the four-person crew.

According to him, once the mover realized a man had arrived, he “started walking it back almost immediately.”

More recently, in March 2026, a viral r/Williamsburg post made a similar allegation.

The poster claimed that before they were even done unloading, a Piece of Cake foreman approached her with a calculator on his phone and told her that 25% of the moving price was “standard.”

She said the workers became hostile after she explained that she couldn’t afford that amount. Ultimately, she said she Venmoed them money because she felt intimidated.
