A woman and her husband picked up two personal-sized cakes from Nothing Bundt Cakes. However, she realized something was amiss when she tried to take a bite of the small chocolate cake.
In a video with over 2.7 million views, TikToker Reina Arvizu (@reinaarvizu) digs into a yellow cake, showing the expected, fluffy texture.
“I have been eating mine,” she says. Then, she pulls the chocolate cake her husband got into view. Arvizu takes a fork and begins stabbing the top of the cake. The fork doesn’t even break through the frosting.
Her husband flips the cake over and pulls the bottom apart as hard as he can. The inside of the cake is made of foam.
“We got a fake Nothing Bundt Cake,” she says, unable to contain her laughter.
The caption reads, “What happened here please help…that’s after got a “free bag ” that we were still charged for.”
Why Do Bakeries Have Fake Cakes?
Nothing Bundt Cakes isn’t the only bakery to use fake cakes. However, customers usually don’t end up with them.
The fake cakes, made of styrofoam and concrete ganache, save bakers time and supplies, since the display can be used without going bad.
There are some cases where customers may want a fake cake, though.
According to BakeSmart, the fake cakes may also be used to create an ideal version of the cake to use when “aesthetics” are more important than having an edible treat available. For example, some couples could opt for a fake wedding cake for decoration and serve an alternate cake for dessert.
Did She Get A Replacement Cake?
The Nothing Bundt Cakes official TikTok account reached out to Arvizu via comment after her video went viral. It reads, “Check your DMs.”
The TikToker later commented, “UPDATE: they did reach out! I will post an update when I can!!” She has not yet shared an update on her conversation with the bakery chain.
In the comments, viewers shared how they would have reacted to the fake bundt cake.
“I’d be so mad if I got a display because I literally only get these if someone brings one/the mini’s to work or my free birthday one,” one wrote.
Another said she would keep the fake cake, adding, “The way I wouldn’t be mad cause that’s actually cute.”
Other viewers shared that they’ve also received, or even sold, display items on accident.
“I sold a display cannoli when I worked at a bakery. I was so upset, but we laughed for days about it,” one commenter said. They continued, “I waited for them to call or come by, but they never did.”
A second shared, “This happened to my mom at a pretzel shop lol hot, packaged plastic yummy.”
“I had that happen to me at Denny’s back in the early 2000’s with a slice of peanut butter pie. Mine actually had a sticker on the bottom,” a third added.
