With just about a week and a half until the film’s official premiere, the first reactions to Christopher Nolan’s new movie Oppenheimer have begun to hit the internet.

Starring Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer,  one review says that Oppenheimer is “Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece,” which is certainly saying a lot considering he made The Dark Knight and Interstellar.

“A bold, tragic look inside humanity’s darkest hour. Riveting, world-class performances and breathtaking imagery that blows a load of emotion inside you [strange phrasing there but okay]. Not just another biopic, it’s the best historical movie ever made,” tweeted The Atom Review.

That’s not the only review to invoke the word “masterpiece” when discussing Oppenheimer, though.

Oppenheimer may be Nolan’s masterpiece. A chilling, galvanizing spectacle anchored by astounding performances. Cillian Murphy transforms into the destroyer of worlds. This is a *movie* movie and definitely an Oscar contender,” said Ben Mekler.

Regardless of whether or not they consider it to be Nolan’s masterpiece, movie critics seem to agree that Oppenheimer is just generally excellent.

Oppenheimer is incredible. Every aspect of the film is worth talking about, from the brilliant performances to the amazing work behind the camera, to the way Nolan tells the story. The 3-hour runtime flies by,” says a review from a writer at Collider.

You can check out a few more brief reviews of Oppenheimer — which is based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin — below.
