A woman wanted a steak dinner after a “bad day” and went to three different steakhouses to try to get a table. After over an hour long waitlist at each location, she decided to give Outback Steakhouse another chance.
In a video with over 116,000 views, TikToker @that1crazy72 sits in a booth at Outback and questions whether it’s considered the “Kmart of Steakhouses.”
She explains that she went to a local steakhouse, Texas Roadhouse, and LongHorn, only to find a wait list that she wasn’t willing to put up with. However, she notices that Outback Steakhouse only had a few tables occupied when she entered.
“There’s literally like four people in this entire restaurant,” she says. “So do they know something that we don’t? We’re going to wait until the food comes out.”
The TikToker immediately notices that the broccoli doesn’t appear fresh. She takes a bite and shakes her head.
“This looks retched,” she says. “That broccoli is super old.”
She says the steak was fine but wasn’t anything special.
“The steak, to me, tastes like a steak that my husband could cook at home,” she continues. “What’s going on? Why aren’t people coming to Outback? It’s not great, but it’s not bad either.”
The caption reads, “Granted we haven’t been to outback I years but to have a whole restaurant to ourselves at dinner time is wild.”
Has Outback Steakhouse’s Quality Gone Down?
According to Tasting Table, Outback used to have the top sales out of all the major chain steakhouses. However, rising costs and perceived better value and quality at competitors like LongHorn and Texas Roadhouse seem to have knocked it down.
Recent customers on the r/OutbackSteakhouse subreddit said they’ve noticed a sharp downturn in the quality of the same dishes they used to enjoy.
“Went there 3 weeks ago and the steak was the worst I’ve ever had. Tried it again a few days ago at a further one away and same thing, the steak is like rubber,” one wrote.
A second shared, “I stopped at one because it was next to my hotel earlier this year. Everything was fine EXCEPT the steak. It was tough, overcooked and yet not seared, gristly, fatty, just a disaster.”
“I went there last week. I feel that since Covid it’s changed a lot, but I was going to give it another try. Prices have gone way up. The bread is smaller and the salads are smaller. The steak was mostly gristle,” another customer suggested.
Do Viewers Agree?
In the comments, viewers debated which chain steakhouse reigns supreme for a decently priced steak dinner.
“Texas Roadhouse is the only one that everything is made from scratch. Nothing frozen except ice cream. That’s why it’s worth the wait,” one wrote.
Another steak lover commented, “We have Outback, Texas Roadhouse and Longhorn in my town. Longhorn is the best, Outback the worst.”
“Outback was once the go to for me…I support private owned businesses these days,” a third added.
Others said they decided to stop eating at Outback entirely.
A viewer wrote, “I don’t eat there anymore. Steak quality has dropped to poor.”
“My last experience at Outback was horrible. There was only one other table being served. My lettuce in my salad was rotten…They gave me gift cards and I still never went back,” a second shared.
