A bombshell new report reveals the Pentagon secretly operated a decades-long disinformation campaign to hide classified weapons programs being conducted at Area 51. According to the report, the United States Department of Defense fabricated evidence of alien technology and encouraged UFO stories as a cover-up to what was really taking place at the mysterious military base.
The report, published by the Wall Street Journal, reveals that the U.S. government’s efforts to promote myths and conspiracies about UFOs date back all the way to the 1950s. Among those efforts were an Air Force colonel providing a civilian with fabricated photos of flying saucers near Area 51, briefing Air Force servicemen about a fake unit that supposedly investigated alien aircraft, and lying to people who witnessed secret military projects.
“At times, as with the deception around Area 51, military officers spread false documents to create a smokescreen for real secret-weapons programs,” Wall Street Journal reporter Mikayla Whitmore explained. “In other cases, officials allowed UFO myths to take root in the interest of national security — for instance, to prevent the Soviet Union from detecting vulnerabilities in the systems protecting nuclear installations. Stories tended to take on a life of their own, such as the three-decade journey of a purported piece of space metal that turned out to be nothing of the sort. And one long-running practice was more like a fraternity hazing ritual that spun wildly out of control.”
These finding were brought to light by a 2024 report by the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO). The AARO was established in 2022 to investigate UFOs, referred to as UAP, or unidentified aerial phenomena (or unidentified anomalous phenomena), by the Pentagon.
Following the release of the AARO report, a Defense Department spokesperson admitted that the AARO had, in fact, uncovered evidence of fake classified program materials relating to extraterrestrials, and that the DoD had briefed lawmakers and intelligence officials about the discoveries.
While fascinating, this news about the U.S. government’s Area 51, UFO and alien disinformation attempts only add more fuel to the conspiracy fire and raise many more questions.
For example, why did the FBI reportedly raid the homes of a popular Area 51 website operator, seizing his computers and other equipment in 2022? Were the drone sightings that captured so much attention earlier this year just more disinformation being spread by the U.S. government? And if the government knows about these myths, why are they so interested in the many whistleblowers that have come forward recently? Is that interest also being faked just to satiate a public that continues to ask questions?
