  • It’s been nine years since Grand Theft Auto V was released.
  • After years of speculation, Rockstar Games has finally announced a new game in the franchise.
  • Rockstar says the next entry is in “active development.”

After years of speculation, rumors, and demand from fans of the iconic Grand Theft Auto franchise, Rockstar Games has finally, and considerably quietly, confirmed that a new entry in the franchise is in “active development”:

“Many of you have been asking about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. With every new project, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we’ve previously delivered. We’re pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the series is underway,” Rockstar Games shared in a tweet.

“We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details. On behalf of our entire team, we thank you all for your support and cannot wait to step into the future with you!”

Pressure has been mounting on Rockstar Games to confirm a new Grand Theft Auto for some time, as it’s now been nine years since the most recent entry in the franchise, Grand Theft Auto V, was released.

While Rockstar has added updates to the game throughout the years, it’s never been enough to change the fact that it’s been almost a decade since they put out a new GTA game. Just to put into perspective how long it’s been, the game was originally made for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. To be fair to Rockstar, though, they did roll out Red Dead Redemption 2 in that time frame, which some think is the greatest game ever made.
