The first trailer for Rust, the controversial and infamous Western film in which a prop gun carrying a live round, held by actor Alec Baldwin, shot and killed cinematographer Haylna Hutchins, has been released online. Rust was filmed in 2021 and has spent recent years trying to acquire distribution.

Halyna Hutchins, 42 years old, was the cinematographer on Rust and was killed on October 21, 2021 after she was accidentally shot by a live round that had made its way into a prop revolver that was being used on set by Alec Baldwin. While Baldwin claimed to have not pulled the trigger on the gun, this was disputed during the case by the prosecution.

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer on the film, was ultimately found guilty and sentenced to 18 months in prison. Baldwin, on the other hand, was ultimately acquitted on charges of involuntary manslaughter after the charges were dismissed to a a Brady disclosure violation, with the judge finding that authorities “intentionally and deliberately” withheld evidence from the defense.

You can check out the official trailer and synopsis for the film below:

“In 1880s Kansas, recently orphaned Lucas McCalister (Patrick Scott McDermott) accidentally kills a rancher and is sentenced to hang. In a twist of fate, his estranged grandfather, the notorious outlaw Harland Rust (Academy Award nominee Alec Baldwin), breaks him out of jail and takes him on the run toward Mexico. As they flee across the unforgiving wilderness, the fugitive pair must outrun the determined U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a ruthless bounty hunter named Preacher (Travis Fimmel).”

In addition to Baldwin, Rust also stars Patrick Scott McDermott, Travis Fimmel, Frances Fisher, and Josh Hopkins. While the film has been sold in some international markets, it has yet to acquire a domestic distributor and thus does not have a release date.

Since the death of Hutchins and subsequent legal proceedings, Baldwin has appeared in just four little-seen B movies, Supercell, 97 Minutes, Atrabilious, and Crescent City, and featured alongside his family in the widely-panned TLC reality TV series The Baldwins. He has recently been portraying Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Fox News host Brett Baier on Saturday Night Live.
