After the much-maligned Star Wars sequels did everything they could to tarnish the legacy of the original trilogy, there was plenty of speculation about the future of the franchise. However, when Disney purchased the rights to the movies in 2012, it was clear that the world was going to get more Star Wars on the big screen at some point.
Thanks to the company’s penchant for squeezing as much money as possible out of their intellectual property, Disney decided to do what it could to go toe-to-toe with the Marvel universe when it comes to pumping out as many Star Wars movies as possible. After The Force Awakens raked in over $1 billion at the box office, they doubled down by focusing on the production of “stories” to compliment the “official” movies starting with 2016’s Rogue One.
The newest film in the category is Solo: A Star Wars Story, which will track the origin of the smuggler originally portrayed by Harrison Ford. We got our first look at the film during the Super Bowl before getting treated to a full-length trailer, but neither of them really gave us any insight into what the movie is actually about.
Thankfully, a new trailer has dropped that finally gives us some hints concerning what the movie is actually about.
Anyone who’s been looking forward to seeing Donald Glover’s interpretation of Lando Calrissian will be glad to know he gets plenty of time in the spotlight alongside (the largely untested) Alden Ehrenreich in addition to Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, and whoever plays Chewbacca.
Thanks to the number of reshoots required and a relatively low-key marketing campaign, it seems like a lot of fans are a bit skeptical about Solo— especially after the divisive reactions to The Last Jedi. With that said, Disney has already turned its attention to a new trilogy when the most current one comes to a close, so even if this is a flop, don’t expect that to have any real impact on the future of the franchise.
