It’s pretty common to find alcohol on flights. It’s also, it turns out, kind of a problem.
While having one or two glasses of wine on a long flight is likely not going to cause an issue, if you fill a plane with drunk passengers, you’re likely to have an incident or two. According to a November 21, 2021 memo from the Federal Aviation Administration, there were almost 300 alcohol-related passenger incidents in 2021 alone, amounting to almost one alcohol-related incident per day.
Consequently, many airlines restrict alcohol consumption. That said, there are always some people who find ways to get around the rules. One woman recently shared her story of encountering someone circumventing the rules—and revealing a lot about themselves in the process.
What Happened On This Spirit Airlines Flight?
In her video, TikTok user Caylie Clarke (@cayliexclarke) recounts the “craziest airplane experience [she] ever had in [her] life.”
According to Clarke, she booked a flight on Spirit Airlines. She paid extra for an exit row window seat. When she got on the plane, there was no one in the middle seat, but there was a man sitting in the aisle.
“The flight attendant comes around and gives their spiel about the exit row and how you have to help in the case of emergency,” Clarke recalls.
“They need a verbal yes. And he asked me first, and I’m like, ‘yes,’” she starts. “Then the guy that’s on the aisle, he’s like, ‘Actually, I was an Eagle Scout, so I’m more than prepared for this role.’ And immediately, the flight attendant is just like, ‘Hey, hey, I just need a verbal yes.’”
“So I’m like, immediately, ‘OK, this guy’s got jokes,’” Clarke adds.
Soon after, Clarke would discover that the man had more than just jokes.
What’s In His Bag?
After the flight attendant left, Clarke felt a tap on her shoulder. When she turned, she saw that the man was holding “a shooter of Tito’s.”
“He says, ‘You want one?’ And then, he proceeds to hold up this entire—the biggest Ziploc bag I’ve ever seen full of Tito’s shooters,” Clarke says. “And I was like, ‘Period, dude. Like, sure.’”
And so, the two began to share drinks. Clarke thanked the man for his kindness by buying him a soda, at which point he began to share his life story.
According to Clarke, the man said he was in the middle of a divorce. During this time, he reconnected with his high school girlfriend—and now, he’s flying from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Los Angeles, California, to meet up with her so they can drive back to Florida together to move in with each other. He also showed a significant amount of hickeys on his neck.
“I’m talking softball-size hickeys on this man’s neck,” Clarke recalls. “He’s like, ‘Yeah, this is the type of stuff we getting into.’ And I’m like, ‘Cool, dude.’ I’ve never seen such big bruises in my life.”
Clarke then discovered that the man had already proposed to his new girlfriend, even though neither of their divorces had been finalized.
Can You Drink Your Own Alcohol On A Flight?
There are a variety of rules surrounding alcohol on airplanes.
First, you are allowed to bring your own alcohol on a plane in a carry-on, so long as it meets the TSA’s standards regarding liquids and gels. Flyers are allowed quart-sized plastic bags with 3.4 fl oz bottles. If they want to fill those bottles with alcohol, the TSA says they are allowed to do so.
Additionally, passengers are allowed to purchase alcohol at duty-free stores and bring it onto planes.
However, once on the plane, passengers are not allowed to consume their own alcohol. As noted on the TSA website, “FAA regulations prohibit travelers from consuming alcohol on board an aircraft unless served by a flight attendant.” Those caught violating this rule can be fined thousands of dollars.
One of the reasons for this, per VICE, is that intoxicated passengers are not allowed to board an aircraft. By being in charge of all the alcohol service, they can ensure no passenger gets too intoxicated to fly.
Commenters Aren’t Surprised
Some commenters wondered how the flyer managed to get the booze on the flight. Others simply stated that this felt par for the course on Spirit.
“This is SUCH spirit behavior from him,” wrote a user.
“This sounds like the sorta thing I’d expect on a spirit flight ngl lmao,” added another. “Dude could be their mascot honestly.”
“As some1 who chooses Spirit, this is 1 of the reasons i fly them cause some of my seat mates have been so top tier entertainment for me,” shared a further TikToker.
@cayliexclarke Spirit quite literally has inflight entertainment. Happy for them tho 🤣 #spiritairlines #funny #story #airplane
