Evil artificial intelligence agent over television static
There’s only so much you can do to avoid technical difficulties in the television business. However, the production company behind a popular show in Sweden committed an unforced error after turning to an A.I. agent that reportedly deleted an entire season of a program that was basically ready to air.
Companies around the globe have started to turn to artificial intelligence to handle a wide variety of tasks that have historically been reserved for human beings. The technology has plenty of potential when it comes to optimizing workflows and tackling menial duties, but it also has plenty of well-documented shortcomings that can end up causing more problems than they solve.
A.I. is still in its infancy, and there’s been no shortage of anecdotes concerning agents that have caused some issues after obliterating the guardrails they were instructed to adhere to and going rogue by performing tasks they had no business doing.
That was seemingly the case with one that was supposed to be helping a production company in Sweden, which has been forced to start from scratch after losing an entire season of a reality series that was supposed to air in a little over a month.
An A.I. agent was blamed for erasing a season of a television series in Sweden
I’m going to go out on a limb and assume most people reading this are not intimately familiar with Swedish television, and if you’re an American who’s aware of The Challenge Sverige (the country’s take on the MTV reality series of the same name), you’re a member of a vast minority.
The first season of that foreign adaptation unfolded over the course of 20 episodes on TV4 in 2024, as two dozen contestants on two-person teams competed for the 1 million krona (~$100,000) prize that was ultimately awarded to Jens Rönnqvist & Sandra Cucarano.
According to Aftonbladet, the second season of The Challenge Sverige was slated to premiere on the same network on November 22, but that will no longer be the case due to an incident that unfolded at Mastiff, the production company that puts the show together.
The outlet cited sources who said the company was using an A.I. agent that was given access to the server that was being used to store the upcoming season, but things took an unfortunate turn when it went rogue and deleted the entire thing. There was seemingly no way to recover the scrubbed cut, which was the result of “hundreds of days of work” editing the raw footage that is still at Mastiff’s disposal.
Things took another turn following the publication of that article, as a representative for TV4 pushed back against the initial report by blaming “human error” and asserting the issue did not stem from an “AI agent that acted independently.”
Regardless of who (or what) is actually to blame, the series will not debut when it was supposed to, as the premiere is now slated for an as-yet-undetermined date in 2027.
