Fresh off the heels of her new horror film Immaculate, Sydney Sweeney is already looking forward to her next project, which could potentially be a remake of the 1968 cult classic sci-fi film Barbarella.
While Sweeney has been attached to Barbarella for a while now, the Anyone But You star recently provided movie fans with an update while speaking with MTV’s Josh Horowitz in New York City.
“I mean, Barbarella is just such a fun character to explore,” Sweeney said during a recent interview with Horowitz. “She really just embraces her femininity and her sexuality, and I love that. She uses sex as a weapon and I think it’s such an interesting way into a sci-fi world. I’ve always wanted to do sci-fi. So we’ll see what happens.”
When Horowitz asked whether or not beloved Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Baby Driver filmmaker Edgar Wright, whom Sweeney was pictured with at the premiere of her recent film Immaculate, is a possible choice to direct, the 26-year-old A-lister played incredibly coy.

The original Barbarella starred Jane Fonda and was released in 1968 and was directed by Roger Vadim.
In Barbarella, the titular character is a “space adventurer” who is sent on a mission to retrieve a scientist that ultimately goes wrong when she crash lands on a strange planet.
Despite its campy nature, Barbarella is a relatively well-reviewed film as it has a 75% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Earlier this month, Sweeney said that, despite Madame Web flopping, that film was a “business decision” as it helped her set up relationships at Sony Pictures, where she just starred in the successful rom-com Anyone But You and is developing the Barbarella remake.
“To me, that film was a building block, it’s what allowed me to build a relationship with Sony,” Sweeney told GK UK in March. “Without doing Madame Web I wouldn’t have a relationship with the decision-makers over there. Everything in my career I do not just for that story, but strategic business decisions. Because I did that, I was able to sell Anyone but You. I was able to get Barbarella.”
In addition to Anyone But You (which was released in late December 2023), Madame Web, and Immaculate, 2024 will also see Sweeney star in the films Echo Valley and Eden.
