Texas Woman Cracks Open Egg From H-E-B. Then She Sees Something Disturbing Inside: ‘I Didn’t Know Mold Could Grow Inside Eggs’

A Texas H-E-B shopper decided to crack open a carton of fresh eggs she had purchased, only to be horrified by what she found inside.

As TikTok creator @marymamafit holds up one of the cracked eggs, several dark, round spots are visible inside, resembling what you might expect mold to look like.

She called out the grocery store chain directly in the caption. “@H-E-B what the heck,” she wrote. “Eggs full of molddd? Or what happened, cracked two didn’t want to keep going.”

Her clip has garnered over 14,900 views.

Viewers were just as disturbed.

“I didn’t even know mold could grow inside eggs like WHAT,” one viewer wrote.

Another said it was part of a new problematic pattern with the store.

“HEB really going down hill right now. And I’m a die hard HEB shopper,” they wrote.

“HEB has gone way downtown,” another added. “I got a hot food item and it was so dry and tough it would have cut a dog’s mouth. I got potato salad and it was underdone. and every time I’m in there I see damn dogs in carts or off leash.”

One commenter wondered whether temperature changes could have played a role.

“Is that condensation in the container? always make sure when buying eggs, salads or any other fresh item in plastic to avoid buying ones with condensation or excessive water!! huge sign the temp fluctuated too much and got too warm then chilled again,” they wrote.

 An Update

In a follow-up video, @marymamafit cracks more eggs from the same carton to see whether any others have similar spots inside. It isn’t completely clear from the footage, but at least one more egg appears to show dark, mold-like spots.

She also called out H-E-B again in the caption, saying the retailer told her someone would follow up but she still hadn’t heard back.

“They were suppose to email me & as of 08/29/26 I haven’t received a response… H-E-B… (perhaps weekend? )” she wrote sarcastically.

Can Mold Grow Inside Eggs?

Surprisingly, yes.

USDA’s Egg Grading Manual specifically describes “moldy eggs” and says mold can grow on the shell, in cracks, or even inside the egg itself.

The agency says certain conditions during washing, processing, and storage can make that more likely. High humidity, for example, can encourage mold growth and allow it to penetrate through the shell.

“The use of dirty water for washing eggs and dirty processing oil cooler than the egg, and the storage of the egg in unusually high humidity encourage mold growth and mold penetration through the shell,” the USDA says.

In more advanced cases, USDA says mold can spread throughout the entire egg and may resemble what it calls “black rot.”

That is possible because eggshells are naturally porous.

Research has found that fungi and other microorganisms can penetrate the shell and contaminate the contents. One study identified fungal species, including Cladosporium macrocarpum and Botrytis cinerea, inside eggs, while another found that high-humidity storage promoted fungal growth from the shell into the egg white.

If you crack an egg and see something that resembles mold, the USDA advises throwing it away completely because mold can extend below the visible surface, and bacteria may have already spread throughout.
