Garlic: It’s not just for vampire hunters anymore. Just ask one Texan who got really lucky at the casino.
In a TikTok captioned “listen to your parents more often…they have good hacks,” Austin-based creator Jackie Nicole (@jackielnicole) humble-brags about her recent casino hot streak. Weirdly, she credits one of the world’s most pungent spices for her win. “I put garlic in my purse for good luck,” she shared via text overlay.
“This past weekend I went to the casino with my family and my dad randomly told me to put a garlic in my purse (in a Ziplock of course)…and tell me why I actually won,” she added.
Garlic Is Good For… Just About Everything?
Garlic has been used for thousands of years. Many folk tales and folk medicines cite it as a near miracle food. Studies show that it can help manage everything from blood pressure and cholesterol to gut health and possibly improve brain function. Famously, it protects against vampires, but it can also be used to ward off evil spirits and witches. Garlic bulbs were even found in King Tutankhamun’s tomb.
So it stands to reason that over time, people came to view this tasty little powerhouse as a good luck charm. And that’s where we rejoin Nicole’s story.
“I actually won a good chunk of money at the casino,” she says. “So put a garlic in your purse, and good luck will come.”
Odd Good Luck Charms
Viewers were quick to jump in with more tales of garlic magic as well as other tricks that are said to bring about good luck.
“I saw a video earlier about a lady who uses garlic as protection. She says garlic is magical and you can use it for whatever intention you need,” wrote Laura Ramos (@dramaytequila).
Jumping on the prosperity bandwagon, Ana (@aalo.htx) added, “put cinnamon on your sock too.” And little internet digging revealed there’s actually belief (very prominent on TikTok) that “washing” hands and feet in cinnamon (sometimes with a pinch of salt) brings prosperity and success. So dusting some into your sock is a more expedient route to success—or at least better-smelling feet.
Either way, garlic, good luck, and gambling make (if nothing else) one heck of a weird storytelling recipe.
