Tom Cruise is going viral for being a good samaritan
Tom Cruise is many things. And among them is an intense people person, as attested to by virtually anyone who has had a conversation with the man, who reportedly has an uncanny ability to make the person he’s speaking to feel like the only person in the world.
Security camera footage going viral this week shows Tom Cruise walking through a backstage kitchen area and spotting a staffer sitting with her head in her hands.
Cruise then walks over, taps her on the arm, and checks in — clearly assuming she’s in distress. According to the woman in the video, however, she wasn’t in any distress, but was actually just doomscrolling on her phone.
The 36-second clip shows her standing up in visible shock, the two briefly exchanging words and a fist bump, before Cruise continues on his way. She later posted the video herself, saying she was left “in complete shock” and could barely manage to say his name back to him.

The internet has eaten it up, with replies calling the gesture refreshingly genuine in an era of manufactured celebrity moments, even as a few skeptics wondered if the footage was staged given how cleanly the camera caught the whole thing.
Cruise was reportedly on-site promoting his new movie, Digger, which hits theaters this week on October 2.
Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the film casts Cruise wildly against type as an eccentric oil tycoon-turned-reluctant savior trying to stop an eco-disaster he caused, co-starring Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, and Sandra Hüller.
While early reactions have called it one of the strangest, boldest swings of Cruise’s career, box office tracking is currently projecting the film to be a bomb.
