Some movie fans are beginning to suspect 'Digger' is secretly a musical
Tom Cruise’s new movie Digger, his first strictly non-franchise project since 2017 and his first purely non-action film since 2012, is just weeks away from hitting theaters. Some fans, however, are beginning to believe we still don’t actually know what it’s about.
While the synopsis for Digger has already been confirmed — “Digger Rockwell (Tom Cruise), the most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything” — its genre apparently remains up for debate, as there’s a conspiracy theory brewing that the film is actually a musical.

On the official Wikipedia page for Digger, the film’s genre is described as being a “satirical black comedy.” Film fans who are looking forward to seeing Digger naturally have varying opinions on it being a secret musical.
“Been following this the last couple of days. I swear, if I walk into Digger and it’s secretly a musical… I’m gonna be so stoked,” one tweet read.
“If I pay to watch this at the cinema and this turns out to be true, very bad things will happen,” a second countered.
Digger is directed by Alejandro Iñárritu, the filmmaker of acclaimed movies such as Babel, Birdman, and The Revenant — the latter of which famously saw Leonardo DiCaprio win his long-awaited first Academy Award. Iñárritu also won Best Director for both Birdman and The Revenant.
Alongside Cruise, seeking his first Oscar nomination for acting since being nominated for Best Supporting Actor (Magnolia) in 2000, Digger also stars Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Emma D’Arcy, Burn Gorman, Robert John Burke, Michael Stuhlbarg, and John Goodman.
