‘They Tried to Play You, That’s Only Half The Steak’: Detroit Man Orders Tomahawk Steak. Then It Comes Sliced. Is It A Trick?

A Detroit woman went to a nice restaurant with her husband, and he ordered a tomahawk steak. However, the couple shared their confusion at the meal’s presentation.

In a video with over 303,000 views, TikToker Lola Bunni (@lola_bunni313) sits across from her husband. A large steak sits on a light blue plate in front of him. Her husband looks around the restaurant, seemingly looking for their server.

“[He’s] mad. He ordered a tomahawk steak, and they sliced it up,” she explains.

On-screen text notes that the server did not ask her husband whether he wanted the steak pre-sliced.

Is It Normal For Tomahawk Steaks To Come Sliced?

While many diners picture a tomahawk steak as a large slab of meat with the bone still protruding from the side, upscale restaurants may pre-cut the steak for a nicer presentation.

Restaurant workers on the forum Quora noted that tomahawk steaks are usually large and contain multiple portions, so kitchen staff will typically slice them up so they can be shared more easily.

However, not all restaurant customers agree with the practice. On the r/Cooking subreddit, one user lamented that “a good steak should be served whole” and questioned why “fancy restaurants” pre-cut the meat.

In the comments of the post, others shared mixed opinions.

“When I go to a nice steakhouse, they wouldn’t dare cut my steak for me…” one wrote, agreeing with the original poster.

Another countered, saying, “It sounds like I’m in the minority, but I actually prefer when steaks are served sliced.”

What Do Viewers Think Of The Pre-Cut Steak?

Some commenters suspected that the pre-cut steak was meant to conceal how much steak the restaurant served the man.

“They do this on purpose they can take the meat from one tomahawk steak to serve two people,” one suggested.

Another insisted, “That’s no tomahawk steak, that’s a switchblade! They stole half that man’s food. The trying to slick by laying it flat and side-by-side to match the length of the bone.”

However, others who eat at upscale steakhouses assured the couple that the presentation is normal.

“So common in fine dining unfortunately. drives my husband up the wall but we ordered a $200 tomahawk in maui and it came sliced,” a commenter explained.

“Tomahawks are usually sliced tableside or prior to coming to the table very common at steakhouses,” a second wrote.

A third said, “That’s how most places do it. I’ve never had one that wasn’t cut but hey could be just me.”
