A woman discovered that her bag of Tostitos Hint of Lime chips advertised that they were 'flavored triangles.' What does that mean?
A woman says that Tostitos changed the name of their tortilla chips. Now, the internet is wondering if they’re really tortilla chips at all.
Being a snack fan in America is, pardon the pun, a mixed bag. On the one hand, you have access to more snacks than you could possibly consume in a single lifetime. For example, there are over a dozen flavors of Pringles, and if you’re a fan of protein, you can now find it in everything from breakfast cereals to popcorn.
On the other hand, snack foods are often hit by shrinkflation and ingredient changes. Shoppers have found “family-sized” snack bags with just a few chips, hilariously small portions of Halloween candy, and classic snacks that, due to ingredient changes, no longer taste like the original.
Given this snack landscape, it’s no surprise that Americans treat any change to their beloved treat with skepticism. For example, one woman recently noted a change to the label of a classic Totinos product. Now, some are crying conspiracy.
Uh, What’s Going On With These Tortilla Chips?
In a video with over 63,000 views, TikTok user @jcwestsideisthebestside notices something peculiar about her bag of Tostitos chips.
“Can someone tell me when these went from ‘chips’ to ‘flavored triangles’?” she asks.
It’s true—the phrase “tortilla chips” does not appear prominently displayed on the bag. Instead, the majority of the bag is taken up by the brand’s logo and the title “Hint of Lime Flavored Triangles.”
While this clearly bothered the TikToker and plenty of viewers online, there may be a reason why this label looks the way it does.
It’s Not A ‘Frozen Dairy Dessert’ Situation
Immediately, commenters began to speculate that they weren’t called “tortilla chips” due to a legal requirement. These commenters seem to believe that something in the ingredients must have changed, making it no longer possible for Tostitos to label their product as “tortilla chips.”
“Means there’s just chemicals in there,” wrote a user.
“If they stop calling it a chip, it’s because they legally can’t,” added another.
This skepticism is understandable. Many “ice cream” products have changed their official listing to “frozen dairy dessert” due to their updated recipes, which cannot be legally classified as “ice cream.”
Similarly, some British candies no longer advertise themselves as being “chocolate.” Instead, they say the treat is “encased in a smooth milk chocolate [flavor] coating.” This is because their updated recipes contained less than the legally required 20% cocoa solids.
This isn’t what is happening here. If one looks closely at the bag, the bottom left corner still contains the words “tortilla chips.” So, what’s going on here?
It’s About The Shape
In the comments section of the TikToker’s video, some users speculated that the title “flavored triangles”—which has been in use since as early as 2022—is not because of the ingredients of the chips. Rather, it’s because of the chips themselves.
“I think it’s just to distinguish the shape,” wrote a user. “They clearly still call them tortilla chips on their site.”
“It says tortilla chips in the bottom corner. I thought the same thing when I saw ‘triangles,’” echoed another. “Guess they want to differentiate the shapes.”
While this is pure speculation, it does make sense after looking at other products in the Tostitos lineup.
For example, the primary label for the brand’s circular chips also does not mention tortillas. Instead, it simply says “rounds.”
This is the case across different products. To offer another example, the “Scoops!” are simply labeled “Scoops!,” and the classic tortilla chip shape is dubbed “Restaurant Style.” The website’s description of all of these products still labels them “Tortilla Chips.”
So, if you’re a fan of Tostitos Hint of Lime tortilla chips, you can rest easy knowing that they are, in fact, tortilla chips—though they might not contain as much lime as you think.
