Since 9/11, airport security in the U.S. has largely expanded. But as one flyer discovered, not all of these TSA rules make sense.
The TSA is known for banning a vast range of unusual items, from rare types of poop to marathon medals. So, when Finie Lou (@fini.lou) was banned from bringing her Swiss Army Knife, that should have been the end of it. But then, the discovered a strange contradiction: She could buy the exact same item in the airport after clearing TSA.
In a TikTok that has garnered 1 million views, Lou shared footage of herself looking irritated, while comedic music played in the background. On-screen text read: “TSA took my Swiss Army Knife because it’s considered a weapon and highly dangerous. 10 minutes later and I bought the exact same one inside the airport. Doesn’t make much sense but here I am.”
The camera then panned to her lap, where she was holding a freshly unboxed Victoribox knife.

Does It Make Any Sense?
Many commenters shared their own senseless security experiences.
“I always thought that it was bizarre that I had to throw my water away, yet when I get past security I could order a steak at Weatherspoons and be given a steak knife,” one wrote.
“I got a pocket knife confiscated at a medieval faire and then promptly went and bought a greatsword,” a second said.
While a third said, “They took my Byoma toner from me (it was in my suitcase?) and then I went through and bought a brand new one in Boots.”
And a fourth shared that “they confiscated my PLASTIC crochet needle…”
Meanwhile, a fifth expressed frustration at these rules. They said, “If there’s one thing TSA is going to do, it’s be losers & fail at their job. The inconsistencies in the rules are because, TSA especially, it’s all security theater. The rules don’t do anything to actually make you safer, but you see them confiscate things, so you may feel safer.”
What Are The TSA’s Rules About Knives?
Per the TSA’s website, knives are strictly forbidden in carry-on bags. However, certain types of knives, including Swiss Army Knives in particular, are permitted in checked bags. The TSA website states that any sharp objects in checked bags should be sheathed or securely wrapped. This is in order to prevent injury. Moreover, the site advises that the final decision regarding what is allowed through the TSA lies with the individual officer. This might explain why the TikToker was able to find these items on sale.
Redditors have also reported knives being available in other airport stores in countries like Switzerland and Germany. Ultimately, it looks like the decisions surrounding knives on flights vary based on the country you’re flying with. America, in particular, seems to be one of the stricter countries.
