Top Gun: Maverick in 2022. The combination of Oppenheimer and Barbie in the summer of 2023. Dune: Part Two is in March. While they’re still few and far between, there’s no denying that the summer blockbuster has returned to popular culture, with Twisters being the latest film that looks like it could enter that conversation.

A sequel to the hit 1996 disaster film Twister — which featured Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Cary Elwes, Alan Ruck, and Jami Gertz — Twisters stars rising stars Glen Powell (who, coincidentally enough, was in Top Gun: Maverick) and Daisy Edgr Jones.

Set to hit theaters on Friday, July 19, if the reviews for Twisters are as positive as the likes of Top Gun: Maverick, there’s a chance the film could be the surprise hit of the summer.

Here’s the official synopsis for Twisters, via Universal Pictures:

“Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Carter, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Anthony Ramos) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Glen Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better.”

“As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler, Javi and their crews find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.”

In addition to Edgar Jones and Powell in the lead roles, Twisters also stars Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, Sasha Lane, Harry Hadden-Paton, David Corenswet, Daryl McCormack, Tunde Adebimpe, Katy O’Brian, Nik Dodani, Kiernan Shipka, and Paul Scheer.
