‘Westworld’ Confirmed To Run For Six Seasons, Which Is Odd, Because It Stinks

HBO

I’m on the verge of being out of Westworld. If you’re a regular TV watcher, then you know that pulling the plug on a series you’ve literally spent years watching is essentially the Doomsday Button. It’s the last resort, a move that should only be deployed at the most desperate of times. I’m not a book reader — I wish I was, however, my A.D.D. simply does not allow me (hell, even when I play video games, I need something else in the background to distract me) — but I understand the reading-folk among us have a certain Page Number where they decide whether or not they’ll forge forward. “I’ll give it 75 pages to catch my interest or I bail,” stuff like that.

But when it comes to television, that sort of abrupt exit strategy is rare. Usually, you decide within a couple of episodes — certainly within the first season — whether or not you’re going to continue tuning in.  Saying goodbye to a series in the midst of its third season is a borderline sociopathic move. And yet, that’s the point I’m at with Westworld. I haven’t even caught up on this week’s episode.

I can’t exactly articulate why — maybe it’s because the lead character, Dolores, is as robotic and therefore boring as ever, or maybe it’s the introduction of Aaron Paul into the cast, which too easily just makes me think of Jesse Pinkman — but the series has totally lost me. Narratively, emotionally, I’m just out. The plot is incoherent and the characters are distant. The only scenes I remotely perk up for are Maeve’s, as she’s the only character left worth rooting for.

Nevertheless, earlier today, HBO announced that the series has been officially renewed for a fourth season and will run for two more seasons after that. I’ve got a decision to make: to continue on my loop or to understand the nature of my reality and bail.
