A California woman who heard noises coming from beneath her home thought that perhaps some animals had made a home in her crawlspace. Little did she know that it wasn’t animals, but a naked man that had been living under her house.
The 93-year-old woman who lives in the El Sereno neighborhood of Los Angeles, and her family at first just assumed the noises were caused by some dogs or wild animals. Then the noises got louder. And then they started to occur in what seemed to be in response to people walking around the house.
“It was usually late at night, and we just chucked it off to animals being under the house,” the woman’s son-in-law, Ricardo Silva, told NBC Los Angeles.
“The noises were kind of like knocking. It was kind of like, as my wife was walking, they were kind of knocking back from under the house so she says, you know something’s wrong.”
That’s when they called the police to come investigate. When they arrived they discovered a 27-year-old naked man in the crawlspace underneath the woman’s home. It is suspected he had been living there for the last six months.
After being discovered, the naked man wasn’t in any hurry to vacate the premises. Officers reportedly spent hours trying to coax him out of the crawlspace, even threatening him with police dogs. Finally, they were able to force him out from under the home using tear gas.
“He refused to leave. He wasn’t scared of the dogs, and the first two attempts at gas didn’t fish him out,” Silva recalled.
The family says they will be be adding barriers to the two-foot high crawlspace around the entire house so that something like this doesn’t happen again.
“It’s a bizarre thing, but it’s not probably uncommon, you know, in this day and age, people are looking for shelter,” said Silva.
