‘He Reacted Exactly How You Think He Did’: Woman Who Has Been With Her Boyfriend For 14 Years Proposes To Him. And The Internet Has Thoughts

When you think of proposals, you probably think of men getting down on one knee at sunset or at a nice dinner. Defying this gender role, TikToker Estella (@est.ellita) has the internet up in arms by recently proposing to her boyfriend of 14 years.

Estella posted about the proposal in several TikToks. The most popular one, which has amassed 8.6 million views, was filmed the night before.

“And I know what everybody’s gonna think, and I already know what everybody’s gonna say. But honestly, I don’t even care,” she says.

“I love him so much, and I know he loves me. And this is just something that I feel I have to do. I really want to get married. We’ve been together for 14 years already. He hasn’t proposed. I know he wants to spend the rest of his life with me. He says it all the time. And we’re in love even after this long, so why not?”

Estella Shares Her Proposal Plan

Well, judging by the comments on the video, there are many reasons “why not.” Namely, that if he wanted to, he would.

“He hasn’t proposed because HE DOESN’T WANT TO,” one wrote.

“‘I really want to get married'” a second quoted. “Well, does HE?!”

A third echoed, “He’s not listening to you sweetie. Men will move mountains for a woman he wants. You want a ring, proposal, wedding, house, dog, whatever! Ask for it. If he loves you, he will do it.”

While a fourth asked, “What can I do personally to save you?”

A fifth user also weighed in, saying, “Yes. I think more women like you should propose to men like this. Thank you for keeping him off the streets and enduring his lack of effort. You’ll really be doing women a service for taking one for the team. I hope you obtain everything you deserve.”

In the video, Estella also shared that she plans to ask for his father’s blessing—an idea that most commenters were vehemently against.

Girl, please go live when you ask his dad for his blessing,” another viewer begged. “I have to see that.”

Other TikTokers Weigh In

Other TikTokers are going viral by stitching Estella’s video and offering up their own opinions on the matter.

Danisha Carter, who stitched the video, said, “As progressive as I am, we have to be honest—some dynamics between men and women are wired deeper than any think piece could ever undo. Men are well aware not only of what they are supposed to do according to society when in a relationship. But they know what they are inclined to do when they are in a relationship—a relationship they’d like to keep forever. If after 14 years, when you’ve conveyed that you want to get married, he has not proposed, it’s not your sign to propose for him; it’s your sign to find somebody else.”

Estella later followed up this TikTok with a video capturing the moment she proposed to her partner. But tellingly, comments were turned off. The video amassed 2.3 million views.

What Is The Sunk Cost Fallacy?

In the comments of one of Estella’s latest videos, one user urged her to look into the “sunk cost fallacy.”

The Decision Lab describes the sunk cost fallacy as “our tendency to follow through with something that we’ve already invested heavily in (be it time, money, effort, or emotional energy), even when giving up is clearly a better idea.”

In this case, Estella’s fiancé would be the sinking one. While many might leave the relationship after no proposal, Estella arguably won’t. According to this theory, this is because of the time and emotional energy that has been poured into the relationship. The question is, will this lead to a happy marriage?

A Potential Twist?

Estella later confirmed that the wedding would be in January. But the internet remains unconvinced. In fact, some are questioning the validity of the proposal.

“Estella didn’t propose out of love,” TikToker @pddklobbg said in a video that now has 255,000 views. “She proposed because TikTok pays better than honesty. … She did it for views, for money, for engagement. And now she’s planning a January wedding fully funded by the same people she manipulated. Influencers lie, but this wasn’t just exaggeration. This was a full-on performance play.”

Commenters are hoping this is true, as they enjoy this storyline a whole lot more, with the comments on that TikTok praising Estella.

“You know what… hell yeah. I ain’t even mad,” one of the top comments reads.

“We love her!!” another exclaimed.

“Smart as hell on her part,” a third said.
