After an opening weekend in which You Can See Everything had the highest-grossing debut weekend for a non-musical documentary since Fahrenheit 9/11 in 2004, reports indicate that A24 plans to submit the film in 11 categories at next year’s Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, Best Documentary Feature, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Sound and Best Original Score.
A24 is planning a sweeping Academy Award campaign for You Can See Everything, including in the Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress categories
While You Can See Everything scoring a Best Picture nomination would be history — no doc has ever been nominated in the 98-year history of the ceremony — much of the attention will be paid to Amanda Seyfried’s campaign for Best Supporting Actress.
Seyfried, who enters the film in its second half, plays before herself and Holmes in reenactments — a role for which she already won an Emmy Award for her work in the Hulu series The Dropout. No actor has been nominated for appearing in a documentary in the Academy’s history, which would make Seyfried the first. She and the film can’t compete at the Golden Globes or SAG Awards, however, as they only accept scripted projects.
You Can See Everything grossed $15 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend, making it the second-biggest opening weekend for a non-musical documentary in domestic box office history, behind only Michael Moore’s 2004 film Fahrenheit 9/11.
