I hate movie stars.
Anyway, a couple of quick thoughts from a guy who's voting ballot must have gotten lost in the mail.
- Everyone will say in the next few weeks that Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty), Ben Affleck (Argo), and maybe Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained) got snubbed for Best Director nominations. These people are absolutely correct.
- Would have liked to see the Academy throw us common people a bone and throw in The Avengers for Best Picture. Sure, it wasn't two hours of watching a stroke victim slowly die like Amour, but did you have more fun at a movie this year?
- If you've never heard of Beasts of the Southern Wild, you're definitely not alone. All I can tell you is that it's a pretty good flick made 50% better by having a character named Hushpuppy.
- Silver Linings Playbook was a quality movie, but it's more than a little surprising to see it rack up nominations in every single major acting category.
- All the songs for Best Song—save Adele's Skyfall theme—suck. I'd go on a Django-esque spree to get Rick Ross' “100 Black Coffins” in there.
- Finally, who ya got for Best Picture? This year looks to be pretty wide open: I think Zero Dark Thirty has to be the favorite, but then again, I'm not sure if the voters are going to give it to another contemporary war movie so soon after The Hurt Locker's win. I could see Lincoln getting the traditional vote and winning.
