Amy Nicholson is the author of Tom Cruise: Anatomy of an Actor, so you figure she knows a thing or two about the dude. (Side point: Who the fuck would read that book?)
Nicholson takes a look at our classic interpretation of Top Gun and Maverick’s cocky, maverick maverickness. She flips it upside down, showing how Maverick is actually vulnerable and scared the entire movie. It’s a cool, tough guy facade.
While she makes some really cogent points, I couldn’t help but watch this and scream “NO. SHUT UP. YOU ARE WRONG. MAVERICK IS THE MAN.”
I imagine you’ll feel the same way too.
