After Over 50 Years, Italy’s Automobile Turismo e Sport Is Back With One Of The Coolest Supercars On The Planet

From 1962 to 1964, a car company formed by two Italians named Automobile Turismo e Sport (ATS) was created to be a direct competitor to Ferrari and to compete in Formula One.

The reason for the formation of Automobile Turismo e Sport was because at that time numerous ex-Ferrari workers, such as the company’s founders Carlo Chiti and Giotto Bizzarrini, were unhappy with the company and staged what is known as “The Great Walkout” or “Palace Revolution” of 1961.

Things didn’t exactly work out, however, as after competing in just five F1 events in 1963, finishing just one, ATS ceased competing in the circuit. This lack of success fatally damaged their hopes of using racing as a launchpad to the sales and production of ATS road cars.

Fast forward to 2018, and Automobile Turismo e Sport is back under new ownership, spearheaded by entrepreneur Daniele Maritan and designer Emanuele Bomboi.

They’re keeping things small for now, producing just 12 models of a special Launch Edition of its new GT, with prices starting at $850,000.

However, they are also, just their predecessors, getting into the racing game with a new motorsports division called ATS Corsa, and a new sports prototype supercar called the RR Turbo.

According to a September 17 press release…

“Essential and for track use, the RR Turbo is dedicated to all those drivers and teams that are looking for top performance figures in a car with an accessible price, but equipped with premium parts. Customers will benefit from ATS-Sicom carbo-ceramic discs with lightweight monoblock calipers, double wishbone pushrod suspensions with electronic Tractive shock absorbers, adjustable from inside the cockpit via a touchscreen display, Michelin tires, AIM dash logger, electro hydraulic transmission with paddle shifters, and a tablet console linked to the in-car cameras able to record and live-stream your track sessions.”

“ATS Corsa expresses its ideas with numbers rather than with mere words: 600 hp for 1720 lbs, 2,86lbs/hp power-to-weight-ratio, 2.400 mm wheelbase for 1.900 mm track and 1.030 mm height. What from outside seems a sporty GT, is in reality a car hiding numbers worthy of the best prototypes. An attractive and effective racing car, the RR Turbo has been developed around the idea of benefiting from the performance of a true sports prototype fitted with a lightweight and high-downforce body shell.”

The RR Turbo is powered by a Honda-sourced turbocharged 2.0-liter turbo-four engine. Developed by ATS Corsa with a closed-deck construction, it is equipped with forged piston heads with bespoke intake, exhaust manifolds and a Garret turbine.

Managed by an Hondata ECU, the RR Turbo’s drivetrain produces up to 600 hp at 8500 rpm and 530 Nm of torque, with around 390 pound-feet of torque between 4,000 and 7,000 rpm. The drivetrain is hooked up with a six-speed 3MO FTX sequential transmission with limited slip differential.

And it’s f***ing gorgeous.

Base price for the ATS RR Turbo starts at “only” $120,130 and first deliveries are expected to take place in the spring of 2020.
