I don’t want to pretend like I have anything resembling “street cred,” but growing up in New York in the 90s/00s shaped my music fandom more than I realized, specifically with regard to rap and hip-hop. When I first came to Milwaukee 15 years ago for college, I was flabbergasted by the number of country music fans. I don’t think we had a single country music station on the radio in New York growing up! But I had plenty of the New York hip-hop greats to enjoy on the radio, from Biggy to Nas to 50 Cent to Fat Joe. That’s why I was stoked for the release of these special-edition Terror Squad Air Force 1s from Nike.

I don’t think I can name a single song by Morgan Wallen or Zach Bryan, but I could probably name almost every member of Terror Squad (and Wu-Tang Clan and G-Unit, for good measure). Names like Big Pun and Remy Ma rang out in my ears as much as players on the Yankees and Mets did growing up. Let’s not forget, for better or worse, that we wouldn’t have DJ Khaled if it wasn’t for Fat Joe and Terror Squad. Joey Crack and his group have left their mark on music in more ways than you country music bumpkins will ever understand.
