Old Forester 117 Series: Whiskey Row Fire
Old Forester
Old Forester boasts an incredibly formidable lineup of limited annual releases—especially its vaunted Birthday Bourbon. Last year, it added a new member into the fold in the form of The 117 Series, which is inspired by the history of Whiskey Row, a historic block in Louisville that was once home to the headquarter’s of some of Kentucky’s most renowned distilleries.
That block was engulfed by a four-alarm fire on July 7, 2015 before the first responders who flocked to the scene were able to mitigate the damage. Now, Old Forester is honoring their efforts with the liquid contained in the Fireman Barrels that were filled on the day the blaze broke out.
The end result is a fantastic bourbon that was aged for close to seven years before being bottled at 100 proof. Considering the story behind the liquid, it’s only appropriate that it’s a bit hot on the nose, but there’s almost no harshness to be found once you take a sip.
Once you do, you’ll be treated to notes of honey and brown sugar that perfectly complement the whiskey’s fruitiness (specifically berries and cherry). You’ll also get a bit of oak along with the slight herbal earthiness that seems to unite many of Old Forester’s offerings.
