J.J. Abrams to develop movies based upon ‘Half-Life’ and ‘Portal’

Because making both Star Trek and Star Wars movies wasn’t eating up enough time in J.J. Abrams’ day.

Yesterday at DICE (Design, Innovate, Communicate, Entertain) 2013, the guy who is overseeing the two most beloved science fiction franchises you’ll find anywhere wants to do the same for two of most beloved PC gaming franchises as well.

This news was revealed during alongside Valve co-founder and managing director Gabe Newell; the game studio will be working closely with Abrams throughout. According to Polygon, J.J. had this to say…

“It’s as real as anything in Hollywood ever gets… Which is that we are really talking to Valve, we are going to be bringing on a writer, we have a lot of very interesting ideas.

And both a Portal and Half-Life movie are things I want to see… We’re also aware of the cautionary tales of movies that became games and vice versa. Our goal here to is to treat the world Valve has created in both these properties like anyone would a book or some great story that comes from a pitch or original script — just to treat it with the respect they treat their games and their players with.”

J.J. also has an idea for a video game himself, but that bit of news appears to have gotten not nearly the amount of attention as the bombshell above.

Anyhow, never before has anyone of Abrams’ caliber and stature been linked to an upcoming video game to big screen adaptation. So are fans of the two aforementioned titles, and gamer dorks in general, foaming at the mouths? Well, they’re excited, but not nearly as much as you’d think.

Because many of these same folks were also turned off by the idea of one single person directing both Star Trek and Star Wars. So now this just feels like overkill.

There’s also the sentiment that, with so much on his plate, there’s no way in hell that he’s going to personally helm both movies, unless we have a very long ass time, which is what I also believe.

Then again, it takes almost forever to get anything going in Hollywood, so perhaps that’s how it would have worked out to being with?
