John McEnroe zings Sharapova regarding Serena spat

This is your yearly reminder that John McEnroe is the best analyst in sports. He’s also quite the comedian. Here he is delivering a fantastic one-liner regarding the Maria Sharapova-Serena Williams spat.

“I think Sharapova for the first time’s up a break on Serena.”

(Serena has not lost to Maria since 2004)

For those of you who don’t keep up with the daily shenanigans of women’s tennis, here’s some background about their spat. It started when Serena made a flippant comment about Sharapova’s love life in Rolling Stones.

“There are people who live, breathe and dress tennis. I mean, seriously, give it a rest.” Serena exits the car and the conversation moves on to a top-five player who is now in love. “She begins every interview with ‘I’m so happy. I’m so lucky’ – it’s so boring,” says Serena in a loud voice. “She’s still not going to be invited to the cool parties. And, hey, if she wants to be with the guy with a black heart, go for it.” (An educated guess is she’s talking about Sharapova, who is now dating Grigor Dimitrov, one of Serena’s rumored exes.)

Maria responded by pimp slapping Serena about her newly divorced boyfriend with kids.

“If she wants to talk about something personal, maybe she should talk about her relationship and her boyfriend that was married and is getting a divorce and has kids.”

As far as tennis catfights go, this one’s pretty good. Let’s hope they meet in the Wimbledon finals and settle the score on the grass, or in a KY-Jelly wrestling match. Either one would be fine.
